What an AI sales agent actually does (and what it doesn't)

A clear breakdown of how AI sales agents like Aria find leads, write outreach, and close the loop — and where they still need a human in the seat.

"AI SDR." "Autonomous sales agent." "AI BDR." The category has more buzzwords than buyers. Most pitches sound like the same thing because, behind the surface, most products are the same thing — a thin wrapper over GPT, a scrape, and a Mailgun key.

A real AI sales agent is different. Here's what it actually does, and where it stops.

What it does

1. Continuous lead discovery. A sales agent should be running constantly — pulling from the web, public databases, news triggers, and your own historical wins — to surface accounts that match your ICP. Not a one-time list pull. A live feed.

2. Personalization at the lead level, not the segment level. "Hey {first_name}, saw your company is in {industry}" is not personalization. A real agent reads the prospect's site, their LinkedIn, their last podcast appearance — and writes an opener that proves it.

3. Multi-step orchestration. First touch, follow-up, second follow-up, breakup. Stop the moment someone replies. Re-route to a CRM. Notify the human. This is where most "AI tools" silently break — they send the first email and then nothing.

4. Reply detection and routing. When a prospect responds, the agent classifies the reply (interested / not now / unsubscribe / out-of-office) and either books a meeting, schedules a follow-up, or drops the lead.

What it does not do (yet)

It does not close deals. Once a prospect is in active conversation, you need a human. AI is excellent at top-of-funnel volume and personalization. It is not yet excellent at multi-stakeholder enterprise sales cycles.

It does not replace your ICP work. Garbage in, garbage out. If you can't articulate who you sell to in one paragraph, no agent will save you.

It does not bypass deliverability rules. Warming up domains, sending volume, spam complaints — none of that goes away just because AI is writing the copy.

How to use one well

Treat the agent like an SDR who works 24/7 and never quits, but who needs:

  • A clear ICP brief (what Launchvise calls "drop your URL, we generate it")
  • Connected sending infrastructure (your domain, warmed up)
  • A human in the loop on replies that need judgment

That's the model. Everything else is hype.
